Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2011

Spring is just around the corner and designers recently presented their Haute Couture collections for the season.  Chanel featured a collection that was understated and simple.  A contrast to some of the elaborate collections of the past for the label.  The colour palette was soft, pale and primarily pink.  The clothes took inspiration from Chanel's ready-to-wear classics including the tweed jacket but done with sparkle.  Slim leg trousers resembled skinny jeans worn under tunics but these were done in pale blues and pinks and worn with beaded tops.

Ferragamo's Modern Retro Man

Photo: Giovanni Gionnoni
Salvatore Ferragamo's fall/winter 2011-12 collection at Milan Fashion week was nothing short of spectacular.  The Ferragamo man steps into the new decade with a modern retro feel.  Designer Massimiliano Giornetti tailored lean silhouettes that were simple, modern yet classic.  Long winter white trench coats with large lapels over slim fitting cotton trousers were a common theme in this collection.  He showed soft leathers, silk shirts, military inspired jackets, bulky shearling coats and single button sport coats.

The soft colour palette included shades of camel, white, butter and sienna.  It almost felt like a hint of spring with the light-hued shades.

The video below features the full show for Fall 2011/12.

Are You a Westwood Man?

Vivienne Westwood is perhaps one of the most creative fashion designers. She's never been afraid to go against the grain when it comes to style. Always on the cutting edge she proves she's still got it with this brilliant men's collection.  A mix of the eclectic with the eccentric, Westwood put a new twist on the preppy British schoolboy.  Urban influenced slouchy trousers were held up with jeweled tone belts or funky suspenders.  Instant rock star style is obvious with her use of bold colours, mixing of patterns and to be daring enough to put red lipstick on all these men.

Snoop Dogg & K'Naan Wear Oliberté

Africa is a continent full of richness and potential.  It's a continent whose resources are on the verge of making an impact on our global market.  Some people see it and others don't.  But for Canadian entrepreneur, Tal Dehtiar, he believes in the business potential of Africa.   Dehtiar, is the founder of Oliberté, a line of footwear manufactured exclusively in Africa.  This is the first international company to manufacture shoes entirely in Africa to be sold in other countries.

With factories in Ethiopia, Liberia and Kenya, the company has plans to continue its expansion throughout the continent.  Dehtiar maintains a company mandate of developing business in Africa along with improved employment opportunities.  The leather used for manufacturing is sourced exclusively in Africa, the employees are all local and he even makes sure to employ a workforce that includes nearly 50% women in both factory and administrative positions.  The goal is to create enough jobs that help to develop and build a middle class in African countries.

Dehtiar says, "The only real way to alleviate poverty on this beautiful continent is to build a middle class with fair paying jobs."

He has appeared on the Canadian television show, Dragon's Den, twice presenting his business model with the hopes of getting an investment opportunity.  Unfortunately, the 'Dragons' didn't see the return on investment and he left without an offer to support his venture.

Despite lack of investment, Oliberté continues to see a steady growth in sales with its product line expanding and sold in stores in Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, U.S.A and Finland.  Even celebrities including Snoop Dogg and K'Naan have been spotted wearing Oliberté footwear.

The styles are simple and classic yet very stylish.  Popular styles include the lace up chukka style boot and the lace up euro-style sneaker.  Quality in each pair is of most importance.  Made with leather uppers and rubber crepe soles, the shoes are also re-enforced with hand stitching giving each pair a personal touch.

Watch the video below to hear from the company founder as he shows some of the styles available.

If you don't live in a country where shoes are sold, you can always order online at www.oliberte.com

Norway Bans Fur at Fashion Week

Norway has become the first country to ban fur during its bi-annual fashion week. Seems ironic that a country known for its cold climate would ban something utilized for keeping warm. But, fur is often more about fashion than it has been about function. Although all garments made using fur are prohibited from being shown during runway shows, designers are still allowed to create using it as part of their collections sold in stores.  It just won't be allowed to parade down the runway.

Oslo Fashion Week has set a standard that may or may not catch on with other countries. This is a bold move considering that this season the fashion industry embraced fur with top designers like Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui showing fur in their fall/winter 2010/2011 collections.  Meanwhile, Karl Lagerfeld designed a collection for Chanel that was entirely faux fur.

Norwegian designer, Fam Irvoll, made her views known especially since she never works with fur in any of her designs.  Her influence along with a petition started by the Norwegian animal rights group NOAH was what pushed the decision.  Once the organizers of Oslo Fashion Week signed the petition, along with 200 other designers, models and photographers, the verdict was official.  The general manager of OFW said ""We are doing this in order to increase ethical values in fashion."

What are your thoughts?
